With the right attitude, you can make the best of time-off without ever leaving your hometown. Summer is a great time to travel and take a vacation, but if you’re sticking to your budget you can still have a fantastic time at home.

We’re talking Stay-cation. It’s exactly what it sounds like: taking a vacation but not traveling anywhere. Staycations allow you to get creative and have fun from the comfort of your own home, all while saving money!

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of a staycation.

Explore Locally

You can go sightseeing in your own town and visit places you may not have even known about. Whether you’re in a big city or a small town, there’s plenty to do if you’re just willing to check it out.

Hop on Google and check out attractions near you. You’re bound to find museums, parks, events, or even classes to learn something new. You can check out a local show or visit the pool for a refreshing dip. Pick up on a hobby you might have been ignoring like tennis. You can’t use the “I’m too busy” excuse now that you’re on vacation

Grab a friend and signup for a glassblowing class or an archery lesson. You’ll be doing something out of the ordinary and making memories to last you forever. Some events may not necessarily be free, but you can definitely find coupons and split the cost with others. Check out Groupon or Scoutmob for local deals!

If you’re looking for free activities and feeling active, go ahead and dust off that old bike in the garage and go for a joy ride. You can even find a trail to hike and embrace nature to its fullest. Head over to a nearby park and go for a walk or even have a picnic. After all, it is summer and you’re finally away from work so why not enjoy the warm weather?

Transform Your Home

Staycations don’t even require you to leave the comfort of your own home. Take advantage of your free time and do a little preparation to treat yourself. You can transform your bathroom into the ultimate spa and give yourself the relaxation you well deserve.

Build a pillow-fort or slide the couches together for the perfect view in front of your TV and have a movie night. If you’re alone you can lounge around in your PJs or invite some friends over… tell them to wear something comfy and have a slumber party. It beats paying for an overpriced ticket at a crowded theatre!

A night under the stars is a great way to relax and the best part is that you can camp in your own backyard. If you’re feeling even more creative and have or know someone who has a truck, turn the bed of it into an actual bed and lay out in the moonlight listening to your favorite tunes.

Unplug

This is harder than it seems, but it’s the best break you can get from your hectic life. Turn your phone to Do Not Disturb mode and just do you. You’ll survive a day without social media and you can knock the habit of checking emails frequently throughout the day. Unplug from your daily routine and do anything your heart desires.

Spontaneity can be your guide. You don’t even have to make any plans for the day to feel like you have any obligations to take care of. Just go with the flow and do what feels right. Read a book, redecorate a room, spend quality time with loved ones, play some board games. It’s your staycation so you get to decide how you spend it.

Additional Benefits

If none of that sounds appealing on its own, just think of the benefits of a staycation versus traveling. You’re saving money, you don’t have to worry about an itinerary, there’s no heavy packing involved, you’re not stuck in a dingy hotel, you don’t have to be around strangers (unless you’re into that), and you have more time to relax instead of boarding a flight or taking a long car ride.

Vacations are great and traveling can be exciting, but there’s plenty of time to do it right when you’re more financially stable. Take advantage of a staycation to keep yourself out of a debt and to break the routine of visiting a new place every time you’re off from work. A staycation is the perfect opportunity to truly relax and all from the comfort of your own home.
